Chapter 6: Stay

MAX FELT his curiosity rise as the gharry turned down a narrow path into the steamy jungle. The ride got bumpier as the terrain worsened, but soon enough they were stopped outside the shambles of an old stone building. Jake opened the gharry door and stepped out, holding it open for Max to clamber outside. Max stood and saw an ancient ruin before him, possibly a temple of some kind.

Jake patted the carriage and sent it off before turning back to face a confused Max.

“You live here?” Max asked.

“I do. Come on.” Jake grabbed Max’s hand and led him up to the stony ruin.

Vines had taken over the outside, but Jake had obviously kept them manicured to suit a livable situation. They stepped inside, and Max had to pause to take in his bearings. The room was very open, and light trickled in through the windows and cracks in the walls. Inside, makeshift furniture filled the space, and a bed pallet was centered in a separate section. Jake began to light the lanterns and candles scattered around the dwelling.

“Why here? Surely you could afford a more comfortable place?”

“I could, but something about it here makes me feel at home. It took some time, but I fixed it up and made it a habitable space. Animals can’t get inside, including snakes, and it doesn’t leak much. The original temple goes back behind this area and is partially crumbled, but I salvaged this room at least.”

“What type of temple was it? Don’t the locals frown on living in a holy site?”

“It dates back to generations before, and the villagers now don’t care for it. The elders are happy it is getting some use. Go look at the carvings on the wall.” Jake handed him a candle and went to clean up.

Max took it and walked up to where Jake had indicated. The carvings lit up in the candlelight as he came closer. The images were of couples, even groups of people participating in sexual acts. Max found himself intrigued, staring intently at the images. He soon was rather flustered and felt a twinge in his pants.

“They depict an erotic form of intercourse. Kama sutra, they call it.” Jake explained as he came around the corner in a fresh pair of pants. He walked over to the makeshift kitchen to prepare tea for them. Without even looking, Max could sense that Jake had a huge grin on his face from the way he spoke. “It is a text that the Hindu people follow for their goals in life. Virtue, prosperity, and pleasure are what they depict, and the carvings in this temple cover each topic. This wall is my favorite.”

“I can tell.”

“Sexual pleasure is considered a religious act and is highly enjoyed by both sexes. Not like the civilized culture back in London, where women aren’t meant to enjoy it, women here are encouraged to be hungry for it.” Jake brought the tea over to Max and joined him in looking at the carvings.
